West Ham United 2 - 2 Newcastle United
Attendance: 34,980Referee: Uriah Rennie
Newcastle will have left Upton Park feeling lucky to have the one point having come back from a 2 goal deficit in the first half. West Ham started the game brightly, taking the game straight to Newcastle from the off with Faubert, Zamora and Ashton all testing Toon keeper Harper in the first 10 minutes. However West Ham finally got their first goal of the game on 10 minutes with Mark Noble hitting a left foot shot past the keeper after a cross from full back McCartney.
West Ham continued to pressure Newcastle and keep them in their own half and on the 23rd minute Dean Ashton doubled the Hammers’ lead after he converted from a long ball from strike partner Zamora. The 2-0 lead was a fair representation of West Ham’s dominance and Newcastle looked down and out of the game after a poor first half performance but the Magpies started fighting back and Martins scored his 10th goal of the season after running onto a Joey Barton through ball to poke past hopeful England ‘keeper Robert Green. This was Newcastle’s first shot of the match, and with their second shot of the match 3 minutes later Newcastle equalised with West Ham as Geremi glanced in a header from Martins’ long ball.
The second half saw little action although Newcastle will feel relieved that Boa Morte’s shot from Ashton’s deflected shot went just wide of the post. Martins was unlucky not to score the winner in the final minutes as his low fired shot was brilliantly saved by Green.
Newcastle are still equal on points with Tottenham who were held to a draw at home by Bolton and will be hoping to get as many points as possible from their final 2 games to overtake Spurs to get the highest possible finish they can.
