Hearts 2016/17 Away Kit Revealed

Heart of Midlothian began their 2016/17 Europa League campaign last week and it didn’t go well. Nowhere near as badly as Celtic’s but the Jam Tarts might have reasonably expected to beat Birkirkara in Malta with half an eye closed. Perhaps it was too early in the season for them. Ahem.

They spared their hosts the ignominy of defeat and of their away kit. Let’s just say that as laudable as Hearts idea was, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. It invited and duly received ridicule. As racing colours, they work a treat. As a football kit? The less said the better.

Yes, I know the one on the left is a Scotland kit but back in the day when it was a fashionable design. Next season’s Hearts away kit wouldn’t look out of place at the local golf club with a pair of plus-fours.

OK, so the club decided to celebrate the 5th Earl of Roseberry, Archibald Primrose, who was the 1st Earl of Midlothian and in his spare time, British Prime Minister (March 1894 – June 1895). Subsequently, he was President of the SFA and frankly, looking at his list of achievements in politics and sport, worthy of honour.

But this? No. Primrose yellow, apparently, and pink. Not a good combination on anything other than a Battenburg cake. It’s a bit like painting your face blue in an homage to Mel Gibson; it doesn’t work. Curiously though, as a goalkeeper kit it would be fine!

Such is the fragile and bizarre world of football kits.

All is not lost. I love Hearts home kit; the shirt is fantastic so in the interests of fair play, I commend them for this one:

Now that’s a football kit…
