PSG Football Shirts

In relative terms, Paris Saint Germain (commonly referred to as PSG) are infants of the footballing world, having only been formed in 1970 in a merger between Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. In real terms, however, as a result of significant investment from Qatar Sports, the club are one of the most powerful in world football and look set to dominate France’s Ligue 1 for many years to come.

The club play at the Parc de Princes in the nation’s capital and are the second most supported club in France after bitter rivals Olympique Marseille. Prior to the investment from Qatar, they had won only two Ligue 1 titles in their history (1985-1986 and 1993-1994), along with the European Cup Winners Cup in 1995-1996 but the scale of the investment virtually guarantees them many more league titles and makes them a major contender to win the UEFA Champions League.

Qatari investment has allowed PSG to make some of the highest transfer fees in world football, attracting the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria, David Luiz and Thiago Silva in big money moves.

PSG Home Shirt

The first home shirt worn by the newly formed Paris Saint-Germain in 1970 was actually a red shirt with white shorts and blue socks, as a compromise to include the colours of the two merged teams. It was not until 1973, when fashion designer Daniel Hechter created a kit inspired by the city’s landmark Eiffel Tower, that the basis for the more traditional modern day kit was formed.

However, throughout the 1980s, PSG wore a predominantly white home shirt which featured a navy and red band, a design which was in place for nine seasons from the 1981-82 season. The design inspired by Hechter had to make do as the team’s second choice away kit.

It was not until the 2000s when, under pressure from supporters, kit suppliers Nike began to adopt the more traditional design which is now a consistent factor in all PSG home jerseys. They have continued their attempts to experiment with the design, for example by moving the red band of the home shirt to the heart instead of the centre of the shirt.

PSG Away Shirt

In keeping with the club’s tradition, PSG generally rotate between white and red away shirts – both of which had, of course, been the home shirt at different points in the club’s history. It is with some relief to the supporters that Nike have settled on this design as there had been some appalling creations in the early years of the partnership, including an American baseball style shirt and the infamous chocolate brown creation which ranks as one of the worst football shirts of all time.

With the invention of third kits, Nike generally introduce a black or darker version, or choose to release a kit in either white or red – whichever one is not being used as the away kit. There have been some excellent efforts for the 3rd kit and in particular the 2014-15 kit was one of our bestselling jerseys that season, even outselling the home and away shirts for that year.

PSG Club Badge

Much like the jerseys, the club badge has also evolved since the first crest was released in 1970, which was based on the Paris FC logo. Two years later, after the split from Paris FC, the Eiffel Tower was incorporated into the design for the first time. This has remained in place except during the 1992-1996 period when it was replaced with the acronym PSG although the Eiffel Tower was soon back in place as a result of supporters anger.
