Wales Football Kits

Wales played their first match in 1876 making it the 3rd oldest international football team in the world. This match ended in a 4-0 defeat against Scotland. The following year, Wales played their first home match in a repeat of their first fixture. Scotland were again victorious, this time 2-0 with the game being played at the racecourse ground in Wrexham.

The Welsh play in a bright red football kit, which is the national colours and also worn by the international rugby side.

The country's first appearance at a major tournament came in 1958 when they reached the quarter finals. Their path to this stage was a somewhat strange one. Having initially not qualified for the World Cup, Wales thought they hadn't made it. However, due to political reasons whereby certain teams refused to play each other, they ended up in a playoff against Israel winning 4-0 on aggregate to make it through. Under the guidance of Jimmy Murphy, they made it all the way to the last 8 where a Pele inspired Brazil knocked them out.

At the Euro 2016 tournament, Wales were one of our bestselling football shirts. Led by Chris Coleman and inspired by Gareth Bale, the tournament was only Wales’ second ever appearance at a major championship and despite a semi-final loss to Portugal, they came home to a hero’s welcome in Cardiff.

Neville Southall is the current all-time record appearance holder with 92 caps. Number two on the all-time list is the late great Gary Speed. Welsh Football was rocked in 2011 after the death of Gary. Speed played 85 times for his country, captaining them on 44 occasions. He went on to become national manager in 2010 and is seen as a major catalyst in the nations return to form.

With 28 goals, Ian Rush is the all-time record goal scorer although with 22 goals to his name at the moment and many internationals to come, it can only be presumed Gareth Bale will overhaul his tally in the coming years.

Wales Kit History

Wales have been renowned for wearing a red home strip and have done as far back as the First World War However, in their first appearance at a major tournament, they dawned a 'continental style' yellow and green kit for the very first time. It brought them some good luck as they made it all the way to the quarter finals.

The FAW have had multiple kit suppliers over the years with the likes of Lotto, Kappa and Umbro all supplying them. Adidas took over the supply of the Welsh soccer jerseys in 2013.
