The Story Behind Indonesia's Iconic Football Kits

A Nation United in Red and White

The Indonesia national football team shirt represents far more than just sportswear - it's a symbol of national pride that unites over 270 million people across more than 17,000 islands. Known affectionately as Tim Garuda (The Garuda Team), Timnas (National Team), or simply Merah Putih (The Red and White), Indonesia's distinctive jerseys mirror the nation's flag and embody the spirit of a football-mad country with one of Asia's most passionate fanbases.

Evolution of the Indonesia Kit: From Colonial Orange to Independent Red

Indonesia's kit history tells the compelling story of a nation's journey to independence. During the Dutch colonial era, the team competed as the Dutch East Indies and wore orange jerseys - the national colour of the Netherlands – when they became the first Asian team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1938. Their match against Hungary in France, though ending in a 6-0 defeat, marked a historic moment for Asian football.

Following Indonesia's independence in 1945, the kit underwent a dramatic transformation, adopting the red and white colour scheme that has become synonymous with Indonesian football. The home shirt traditionally features a bold red jersey paired with white shorts and red socks, creating the classic red-white-red combination that has defined Indonesian football for nearly eight decades.

Indonesia's away kits have traditionally incorporated green alongside white, a combination that dates back to the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and continued until the mid-1980s. This white-green-white colour scheme has been revived in various forms throughout the years, providing an alternative look whilst maintaining the team's distinctive identity.

Brand Partnerships and Manufacturer History

Indonesia's kit manufacturers reflect the growing profile of football in Southeast Asia's largest nation. Nike served as the national team's kit supplier from 2007 to 2019, producing some of the most memorable shirts in recent Indonesian football history. The 2018 Nike collection stands out as particularly iconic, featuring a striking red home shirt with a golden Swoosh inspired by the Garuda Pancasila - Indonesia's national emblem featuring the mythical bird-like creature. This design perfectly married modern sportswear technology with traditional Indonesian symbolism, utilising Nike's Fast Fit Vaporknit material to combat the hot and humid conditions of Southeast Asian football.

Between 2020 and 2024, local brand Mills took over kit production, bringing a sense of national pride as an Indonesian company outfitted the national team. The Mills era introduced innovative designs including silhouettes on the home kit, horizontal green stripes on the away shirt, and a bold all-black third kit with golden accents – giving fans more variety than ever before.

Since 2024, Jakarta-based sportswear company Erspo has become the official kit provider in a deal running until at least 2026. Their debut designs have already earned praise from the football fashion community, with the 2025 home kit featuring a classic polo collar and white piping across the chest – a refined, timeless look that honours Indonesian football tradition whilst embracing modern design principles.

It's worth noting that for multi-sport events like the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games, Indonesia wears Li-Ning apparel, as these tournaments fall under the jurisdiction of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee rather than the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).

Most Celebrated Indonesia Jerseys

Several Indonesia kits have achieved legendary status among supporters:

The 2018 Nike Garuda Kit – Perhaps the most beloved modern Indonesia jersey, this design featured a bold red base with gold accents throughout, directly honouring the Garuda Pancasila national emblem. The golden Nike Swoosh became an instant classic, and the shirt was worn during Indonesia's memorable run to the 2018 AFF Championship final. This kit represented Indonesia's ambitions and unity, with Nike's accompanying promotional materials emphasising how the design "summons the power of more than 17,000 islands."

The 1938 World Cup Orange Jersey – Though worn under colonial rule, this historic shirt represents Indonesia (as the Dutch East Indies) becoming the first Asian nation to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Unofficial records suggest the kit consisted of an orange jersey, white shorts, and light blue socks – a far cry from today's red and white, but a significant piece of Asian football heritage nonetheless.

The 2020-2024 Mills Black Third Kit – Breaking from tradition, this all-black alternative jersey featured golden strips and silhouette designs, offering fans a bold, contemporary option. Third kits allow manufacturers to experiment, and this striking design became a favourite for its unique aesthetic whilst maintaining Indonesian identity through the Garuda emblem.

Little-Known Facts About Indonesia Kits

The Kit Controversy of 2010-2012 – Nike's home kit from this era caused an unusual problem: the socks were white instead of the traditional red. When Indonesia faced opponents in all-white uniforms, it created confusion on the pitch. The solution involved mixing kit elements, using a red-green-green combination with green shorts and socks borrowed from the away kit. More dramatically, after a painful home defeat to Bahrain in a 2014 World Cup qualifier on 6 September 2011, the red shorts with green application were scrapped after just one outing and never used again – a rare instance of a kit being retired for superstitious reasons.

Indonesia's National Emblem on Every Shirt – Since 2004, the Garuda Pancasila has been continuously printed on Indonesia's kits, making it one of the few national teams in Asia to so prominently feature their national emblem alongside the traditional federation badge. This double-badge approach reinforces the connection between football and national identity.

Multi-Event Kit Complications – Indonesian football fans might notice their team wearing different brands at continental tournaments depending on the competition. This stems from Indonesia wearing Li-Ning at multi-sport events (Asian Games, SEA Games) under NOC jurisdiction, whilst wearing their football-specific manufacturer (currently Erspo) for FIFA and AFC competitions. It's an unusual arrangement that can confuse casual observers.

The Infamous 1998 Own Goal – Whilst not directly kit-related, one of the most controversial moments in Indonesian football history occurred when Mursyid Effendi deliberately kicked the ball into Indonesia's own goal against Thailand at the 1998 Tiger Cup. Both teams were already through to the semi-finals but wanted to avoid facing hosts Vietnam. FIFA fined both teams $40,000 for "violating the spirit of the game" and Effendi was banned from international football for life. The incident, witnessed by fans wearing Indonesia's red and white, remains a cautionary tale in Asian football.
