Barcelona were one of the last teams to give in to the commercialism of modern day football and it was not until 2006 that any form of sponsor logo was displayed on the football shirts. The club agreed a five year deal with UNICEF, which would actually see FCB donate 1.5 million euros each year to the charity. In 2011-12, Barcelona announced their first corporate sponsorship when they signed a five year, 150 million euros deal with Qatar Sports Investments. Although the club were criticised for going against the “Mes que un Club” (more than a club) principles, supporters realised that the additional investment was necessary to compete with the increasing financial power of the English Premier League.
The famous Barcelona jerseys are blue and maroon and have featured vertical stripes almost since the club’s inception in 1899. In their inaugural match in 1900, the Catalans wore blue and maroon rugby shirts and the colour combination proved a winning one as it has stuck throughout their history.
The club’s colours has led to the nickname of Blaugrans. The origins of the colour scheme are unknown but a popular theory is that they were chosen by founder Joan Gamper as they replicated the colour scheme of his previous club – Swiss side FC Basel.
In the early years, the shorts were white, before being replaced by black ones in 1913, but since 1920, the shorts have been blue until 2005-2006, when the club released red shorts for commercial reasons.
In the 2015-2016 season, Barcelona took the controversial decision to break from tradition and release a horizontally striped kit – instead of the normal vertical stripes – for the first time in their history. Although the kit continued to sell well, such is the global appeal of the club, it was met with a mixed reaction and the club returned to vertical stripes for the 2016-2017 campaign.
To say the club have had some interesting colour schemes for their change kit over the years would be quite the understatement. Among the colours used in recent years were pale green, illuminous yellow, bright orange, purple and light pink.
One of the most popular away kit designs, which tends to be released ever 2-3 years, is the red and yellow colours of the Catalan flag. Such is strong association with Catalunya for the club that this colour combination generally outsells all other variations of the away kit.
Barcelona have only ever had three shirt suppliers in their history. From inception until 1982, there was no kit supplier before local manufacturer Meyba took up the contract until being replaced by Kappa in 1992. They produced a number of memorable kits, including the 1992 European Cup winning jerseys, but were replaced by Nike in 1998, who have held the contract ever since.
