Discover the Spirit of Faroese Football

The Faroe Islands' footballing story is one of the sport's great underdog tales. From a population of just 50,000 scattered across 18 windswept North Atlantic islands, this proud nation has produced moments that shocked the football world. On 12 September 1990, the Faroe Islands made football history when they beat Austria 1–0 in their first-ever competitive international – a victory that ranks among the sport's greatest upsets. Now you can celebrate this remarkable journey with our authentic Faroe Islands football shirts collection.

Faroe Islands Home & Away Kits

The classic white home jersey and bold blue away shirt draw directly from the Faroese flag's distinctive colours. The home shirt features a vertical stripe on the right-hand side consisting of thin lines in shades of blue and red, designed to recreate the colours of the national flag, with subtle touches like "Føroyar" (the local name for the islands) on the collar. Some designs have even featured a map of the 18-island archipelago embossed into the fabric. Whether you're looking for the latest Errea design or classic retro editions, our range captures the essence of the Landsliðið's identity, featuring the proud Faroe Islands Football Association crest.

Current Season Faroe Islands Shirts

Errea has supplied Faroe Islands' kits since 2022 through UEFA's Kit Assistance Scheme, which supports smaller football associations. The home shirt is plain white with a vertical stripe, whilst the sleeve ends and ribbed collar are in blue, and the country's flag appears on the back of the collar. Our current season collection includes:

Retro Faroe Islands Football Jerseys

Take a nostalgic journey through Faroese football history. The Faroe Islands have worn kits from Hummel (until 1988 and 1991), Umbro (1990), Adidas (1992-1998 and 2010-2016), Puma (2000-2008), and Macron (2018-2020) before the current Errea partnership. Our retro collection celebrates that famous 1990 Umbro shirt worn during the Austria victory, classic Adidas designs from the 1990s, and memorable Puma kits from the 2000s. These throwback jerseys connect you to generations of Faroese football heritage and the moments that defined the nation's sporting identity.

Faroe Islands' Football Heroes

The white and blue shirt has been graced by determined warriors who've punched above their weight. Jóan Símun Edmundsson stands as the Faroe Islands' most-capped player. On 5 September 2025, he played his 96th international game, becoming Faroe Islands' sole most-capped player. He made history as the first player from the Faroe Islands to make an appearance and score a goal in the Bundesliga, proving that even from the smallest nations, talent can reach the highest levels.

On 14 November 2014, Edmundsson scored the only goal to defeat Greece in Piraeus, the Faroes' first competitive victory since June 2011. The result goes down as potentially the biggest shock in football history, with 169 places between Greece (18th) and the Faroe Islands (187th) in the FIFA rankings at the time.

Looking back, the original hero remains Torkil Nielsen – a chess player and building company salesman who became a national icon. 32-year-old national coach Páll Guðlaugsson became a folk hero overnight after that historic Austria win. In his autobiography, goalkeeper Jens Martin Knudsen revealed that Guðlaugsson gave a stirring pre-match speech that boosted the team's confidence, telling players to throw themselves into tackles "against those arrogant Austrians" and win for their nation.

Todi Jónsson is considered the most famous Faroese player of all time, memorable for his hat-trick against San Marino. Other legends include Fróði Benjaminsen, who held the caps record for years, Klæmint Olsen, and goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen, whose saves have kept Faroese dreams alive through countless qualifying campaigns.

Famous Faroe Islands Kit Moments

The game against Austria, a Euro 92 qualifier, was played in Landskrona, Sweden because there were no grass pitches on the Faroe Islands at the time. The Umbro shirt worn that night became instantly iconic – the jersey of perhaps football's greatest David versus Goliath story.

On 26 September 2022, the Faroese national team defied all odds when beating Turkey 2–1 in the last game of the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League campaign. The win pushed their unbeaten record to four games, the longest streak in their history. The Macron kit worn during this period holds special significance for fans who witnessed this golden spell.

The 2014-2015 kits worn during the famous Greek double victories – home and away – represent another cherished era. On 13 June 2015, the Faroe Islands beat Greece for a second time, winning 2–1. These two wins helped the team jump from 187th to 74th in the FIFA rankings.

The Faroese Football Story

The FSF gained FIFA membership on 2 July 1988 and the team's first official victory was a 1–0 win in a friendly match against Canada the next year. The FSF joined UEFA on 18 April 1990. The Faroe Islands participated in two Island Games, winning both tournaments in 1989 and 1991. They never entered the tournament again, as the opponent teams were considered too weak a match for the Faroese side.

The Faroese victory was rated number 10 of all-time football greatest upsets by American sports magazine Soccerphile. The win's impact cannot be overstated – Austria's manager was fired the next day, and the entire Faroese population celebrated as the players were welcomed back as heroes.

The islands boast a fascinating football culture shaped by their unique geography. Between 1999 and 2011, the Faroe Islands rotated its home matches between two different stadiums, Tórsvøllur and Svangaskarð. Svangaskarð, perched on a mountain ridge on Eysturoy Island overlooking the sea, became one of the most photographed and dramatically situated football grounds in the world.

As of 26 September 2022, the Faroese national team has thirteen full-time professionals playing in Belgian, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Icelandic leagues, compared to the 1990 team who won the Austria game in Landskrona, which was entirely made up of amateurs. This professionalization shows how far Faroese football has come, though the spirit of those amateur heroes who shocked Austria remains the beating heart of the national team's identity.
