Paraguay is a member of CONMEBOL,
the governing body of football in South America. They play their football in
Asuncion at the multi-purpose 50,000 seater Estadio Defensores del Chaco
stadium.
The national team play in
distinctive red and white striped shirts. Although overshadowed by their more
illustrious South American neighbours, Paraguay have a relatively successful footballing
history with 2 Copa America wins coming in 1953 and 1979. They recorded their
best finish at a World Cup Finals in 2010 when they reached the Quarter Finals
losing to eventual winners Spain.
Paulo da Silva is the record appearance holder for the Paraguayans turning out 133 times for his country with former Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz the national team’s leading goalscorer.
Despite these achievements, Paraguay's most famous player is Jose Luis Chilavert. The keeper played 74 times for his country scoring 8 times; an incredible feat for a goalkeeper. He captained the side during both his World Cup appearances and was named in the FIFA World Cup team of the Tournament in 1998. He was nicknamed the 'Bulldog' due to his lively temper and was famously sent off in 1997 after an altercation with ex-Newcastle striker Faustino Asprilla.
Paraguay are renowned for having a home strip that ties in with the nation's colours on the flag. The national team have had a long standing relationship with Adidas, who took over from Puma as official kit suppliers. The colours of the home jersey are traditionally white and red stripes.
The back of the shirt is completely red with the bottom containing a blue stripe to keep in line with the flag. The collar is red with a special Paraguayan pattern appearing amongst the red stripes on the front of the strip.
