Napoli Football
Shirts
One season guaranteed that Napoli
shirts will go down in history as one of the most famous jerseys in the history
of football. In 1986-1987, inspired by the legendary Diego Maradona, the
unfancied Naples side won the Serie A title. It was the first time that a team
from Southern Italy has won the league and further boosted the legendary status
of Maradona, after his World Cup winning exploits the previous summer in the
1986 World Cup.
Napoli are the fourth best
supported Serie A side and have a fiercely passionate set of supporters.
Nicknamed I ciucciarelli, which
translates as “little donkeys”, the initially attempted derogatory slur after a
poor 1926-27 season has been adopted as a fond nickname, with the club adopting
a donkey called O’Ciuccio as their mascot.
After a period of decline brought upon by financial troubles
and the departure of star players such as Gianfranco Zola and Daniel Fonseca,
Napoli were declared bankrupt in 2004. They were reformed by Aurelio De Laurentiis
as Napoli Soccer and fought their way
back through the leagues, regaining Serie A status and even restoring their
history when De Laurentiis stuck a deal with the liquidators.
With a fresh batch of stars such as Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel
Lavezzi and Gonzalo Higuain all featuring for the club in recent times, Napoli
are once again competing for the Serie A title.
Napoli Home Shirt
The Napoli home jersey is a
beautiful shade of sky blue, which is worn with white shorts and sky blue
socks. The origins of the shirt are the blue waters of the Gulf of Naples.
Having originally featured two shades of blue, a single tone was adopted in
1920 in the form of azure, leading to the club sharing the azzurri nickname with the Italian national team.
Napoli Shirt Badge
The Napoli badge features a large
letter N which is placed in a circle and is traced back to Internazionale
Napoli who also used a similar design on their jerseys. The badge has been
altered throughout the years and the club cannot seem to make up their mind
whether or not they want the club name featured around the N. Various shades of
blue have been used for the badge and there has also been a gold N – a
departure from the traditional white.
Napoli Kit History
The early Napoli jerseys were
manufactured by Puma. The most famous Napoli kits are of course those from the
Maradona era, which were manufactured by sportswear company NR (Ennerree) and
had a number of sponsors including Buitoni and Mars.
In recent times, Kappa and Macron
have manufactured the kits with Lete the primary sponsor.
