Arsenal Football Shirts
Arsenal are one of English football’s most famous and successful clubs and are synonymous with the Arsene Wenger era which brought multiple Premier League and FA Cup Trophies, including the famous Invincibles season where the club went through the entire Premier League season unbeaten. Known for their flamboyant style of football, the red and white Arsenal shirt has been worn by many top players including Dennis Bergkamp, Ian Wright, Patrick Vieira, Cesc Fabregas, Robert Pires, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Thierry Henry.
Formed in 1886 as Dial Square FC by workers at the Woolwich armaments factory in South London, the club found themselves expelled by their amateur peers after turning professional in 1891. After two years in the wilderness, the club, now known as Woolwich Arsenal, successfully applied to join the English Football League – the first team south of Birmingham to do so, wearing an all red shirt with navy shorts and socks. The nickname The Gunners has it’s link with the Woolwich armaments factory and is the reason for the cannon which forms part of the club’s crest.
Arsenal Home Shirt
After an uninspiring period in their early history, Arsenal were revolutionised by the appointment of Herbert Chapman as manager in 1925, who is widely regarded as being the man who started Arsenal’s development into one of the leading football clubs in the world. It was during the Chapman era that the famous white sleeves were added to the Arsenal home shirt for the first time.
The club badge is located on the left hand breast with the manufacturer logo on the opposite chest. It was during the 1960’s that the iconic cannon was introduced onto the shirt. Arsenal would soon have their most successful season – winning the double during the 1970-71 campaign.
Arsenal Away Shirt
Arsenal have had a number of different coloured away shirts throughout their history, but the club are most commonly associated with a yellow shirt and blue trim, which has been worn during many of the most successful years in the club’s history. Worn in the 1979 FA Cup Final victory over Manchester United, The Gunners also wore a yellow change kit in the infamous last minute title victory over Liverpool in 1989 and also during the Invincibles season.
In recent years, Arsenal have experimented with blue, white and navy away kits but the club will always be best recognised with their striking yellow away jersey.
Arsenal Kit History
The first commercial Arsenal replica shirts released for sale were manufactured by Umbro in the mid-60’s. For the 1981-1982 season, JVC became the first brand to have their sponsor logo printed on the shirt. This would be the start of a near 20 year partnership with the club, which saw both Adidas and Nike make the Gunners jerseys.
In 1999-2000, JVC were replaced by Japanese video game manufacturers Dreamcast, whose sponsorship period overlapped with the signing of Junichi Inamoto, whose lack of impact at the club led cynics to believe he was signed to help the club expand into the lucrative Asian market. It was a market the club’s manager Arsene Wenger knew well, having previously managed in Japan before joining Arsenal in 1996.
O2 were the next sponsors and in 2005-2006, the club released a dark currant home shirt to commemorate their last season at Highbury. The club claimed that this was based on the kit worn when they first moved to North London, however doubts have subsequently been raised on those claims.
The move to the Emirates, helped funded by the Dubai based airline, saw their logo emblazoned on the kits in a multi-year partnership with the club.
In 2014, Arsenal signed a multi-year, £30m per season deal with Puma to supply the Arsenal jerseys and a full range of training and leisure wear including tracksuits, jackets, polo shirts, t-shirts and more.
