Liverpool Football Shirts

Liverpool are one of the most successful clubs both in England and European football, having won the second highest number of Premier League titles behind Manchester United and five European Cups – the most of any English side. The club play their home games at Anfield and the famous Kop stand is one of the most iconic in world football.

Throughout the years, Liverpool have been blessed with many of the game’s best players including Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, John Barnes, Fernando Torres and Ian Rush. The global appeal of Liverpool Football Club has meant that their jerseys are one of the bestselling football shirts both in the UK and around the world. Despite a period of underachievement, with the club failing to qualify for the Champions League for a number of years, the demand for the LFC kit has never subsided and they remain a truly global force.

Liverpool Home Shirt

Liverpool famously wear an all red home shirt, with matching shorts and socks. Liverpool were formed following a disagreement between the owner of Anfield, John Houlding, and directors of Everton FC over rent and licensing agreement. As a result, Everton quit Anfield and Houlding created Liverpool FC. The very first Liverpool shirt was the blue and white left behind by city rivals Everton, but this only lasted a few years before the red jersey was introduced.

The club adopted the famous Liverbird – the city’s emblem – in 1901 but it would not be until 1947 that these were first displayed on the shirts.

Having previously worn white shorts, Liverpool wore the iconic all-red strip for the first time during a European fixture with Anderlecht during the 1964-65 season. The change was associated with legendary manager Bill Shankly, who believed that the revised colour scheme would have a psychological impact on their opponents with the connotations of red for danger and power. It is hard to argue against Shankly’s logic as Liverpool went on to become one of the most dominant forces in European football for many years to come.

Modern day Liverpool jerseys incorporate the eternal flame into the design in tribute to supporters who tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.

Liverpool Away Shirt

Throughout the years, Liverpool have had a wide range of away kits. White and black have been the most common colours in recent times, but yellow and green have also been used.

The Liverpool 3rd kit is worn in European competition as well as domestic cup competitions. This has allowed manufacturers to experiment with some unique designs and colours, for example in the 2016-2017, a “toxic” coloured jersey was released for sale as the third choice kit.

Liverpool Shirt History

The first Liverpool replica shirts released for sale to the public were manufactured by Umbro in 1973. It was a partnership which would last until 1985 when Adidas took over the supply of jerseys for a team which had just been crowned European Cup Winners the previous season.

The Adidas contract would last until 1996 when Reebok embarked on a 10 year contract, which included the kit worn in the famous Champions League comeback victory against AC Milan. Once again, Adidas took over the contract of the European Cup winners, however they were replaced by New Balance (formerly Warrior Sports) who signed a lucrative deal for the club in 2012.

Liverpool Training Kit
