Fiorentina Football Kits

For football supporters of a certain age, the purple home kit of Fiorentina is one of the most distinctive and one of the most popular jerseys in European football. One of the hallmarks of James Richardson’s 1990’s Football Italia coverage was the goalscoring exploits of legendary Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta, who spent the best years of his career with La Viola.

Based in Florence, Fiorentina were founded in 1926 and have experienced a number of highs and lows during their history. The club won the inaugural European Cup Winners Cup in 1961 – beating Glasgow Rangers in the final, and have also won two Serie A titles and 5 Coppa Italia titles. There have been bleak times as well though, most notably in 2002 when financial problems saw them demoted to the fourth tier of Italian football, but the club bounced back and have been ever present in Serie A since 2004. This was as a result of overspending in the 90’s, which had seen Fiorentina sign some of the world’s best players including Batistuta and Portuguese playmaker Manuel Rui Costa.

Fiorentina Home Shirt

Legend has it that the famous Fiorentina purple kit was created by accident. In La Viola’s formative years, the club wore red and white halved shirts which were derived from the city’s emblem colour. It was only in 1928 that the purple kit was worn for the first time – allegedly due to a washing mixup when the colours ran after washing the old red and white kits in the river.

The link with the city of Florence has been important in the club’s history. Although the club have had several different badges over the years, each one has linked back to the official emblem of Florence. The most controversial logo was introduced by Flavio Pontello in 1980, featuring one half of the city of Florence and one half of the letter F. Supporters protested against this, feeling it was an overly commercial decision which detracted from the clubs heritage.

The Fiorentina home kit is traditionally all purple, with purple shorts and socks complementing the jersey.

Fiorentina Away Shirt

La Viola have worn different varations of their alternate kits. Predominantly, the away shirt has been white with a dark grey, navy or black third kit often the most popular choices. However, they have also worn yellow away kits, most notably in the 1999-2000 campaign.

Fiorentina Soccer Jersey History

Fiorentina have had numerous kit manufacturers over the years, regularly chasing kit partner. Throughout the successful 90’s period, Lotto, Uhlsport, Reebok and Fila all produced Fiorentina kits.

Adidas took over the contract in 2003, during the clubs turbulent financial period, but they were replaced by Lotto in 2005. The 7 year contract was the longest partnership in the clubs history, before Joma took over the contract in 2012. This partnership lasted just three years, before La Viola switched to Le Coq Sportif in 2015.

Fiorentina have had a number of notable sponsors over the years. Arguably the most famous sponsor was Nintendo, who sponsored the club at the height of the Batistuta era and the Nintendo 64.

The club also had a long standing partnership with Toyota and during the 2010-2011 season, they had a charity partnership with Save the Children.
