Responsible for one of the
biggest shocks in European football history, the Greek national team are
relatively unsuccessful in the wider picture, yet are one of only ten European
nations to have won a major international trophy. Despite only reaching their
first European Championships Final in 1980 and their first World Cup Finals in
1994, Greece shocked the world at Euro 2004 when they defeated hosts Portugal
to win the tournament.
Since then, they have been
relatively more successful and reached the quarter finals at Euro 2012 as well
as qualifying regularly, but they suffered a disastrous qualifying campaign for
Euro 2016 when they were beaten home and away by the Faroe Islands. Incredibly,
the start of the campaign was overseen by Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked
before going on to win the Premier League the following season with relegation
favourites Leicester City.
Greek Home & Away Shirts
The Greek national team jerseys
are traditionally blue and white, which follow the colours of the national
flag. In the early years, they wore a blue and white striped jerseys and
throughout their history, crosses and other designs have also been experimented
However, the home strip has
predominantly been either white or blue. At Euro 2004, they wore a blue home
jersey with white shorts and blue socks. Despite world football being littered
with nations who have adopted a colour combination after a successful
tournament, Greece instead have worn a white shirt as their first choice
colours since the Euro 2004 victory. Given their relative lack of success since
then, they may wish to reconsider this decision!
Whenever they wear a white home
shirt, the away jersey is blue and vice versa. As a result, Greek strips are
one of the closest sales figures we have for both 1st and 2nd
The Greece football shirts have
been manufactured by a number of different suppliers throughout the years.
Asics, Puma, Diadora, Lotto and Le Coq Sportif all had spells manufacturing the
kits until 2003, at which point Greece signed a contract with Adidas.
It was perfect timing from the
German sportswear brand, as the Greece Euro 2004 shirt was understandably the
most popular strip of all time. Sales of adult and kids sizes were unbelievable
and stock was sold out from very early in the tournament. Luckily, a new batch
of stock was produced and it is one of the great football shirts for
collectors, especially if you are lucky enough to find one with the name and
number of Angelo Charisteas on the back of the shirt.
Greece Training Kit
In 2013, Nike signed a lucrative
contract to supply official merchandise for the national team. This deal,
however, coincided with a downturn in both the form of the national team and a
downturn in the Greek economy, with the nation on the verge of bankruptcy at
Despite this, the passion of the
national team’s fans remained strong and we have continued to enjoy
consistently high sales of Greece merchandise. The kit deal with Nike led to an
increasing number of items being made available for sale and if you visit the
Greece football shop at UKSoccershop you will find polo shirts, tracksuits,
training jerseys, pants, sweat tops, hoodies and lots more.
